This special winter program will feature demonstrations on the Iroquois tradition/game of Snow Snake, dog sledding, storytelling and more.
Snow Snake, a long stick, in ancient times was a method for sending messages between Native American villages in wintertime. Today, it is challenging throwing game that tests each participant's strength, coordination, and balance. At the Sainte Marie Winterfest Fred Kennedy, a Seneca and longstanding former North American Snowsnake Champion, will tell the history of the snowsnake. He will demonstrate his throwing technique and help participants develop their skills in the art of throwing the snowsnake.
The exciting sport of dog sledding will be described and demonstrated by members of the Pennsylvania Dog Sled Club, a skilled Central New York dog sledding enthusiast. Visitors will first be introduced to the types of dogs involved in dog sledding, their care and training. Dog sled rides will be available for $1 per ride (weather permitting.)
Native American Craftsman will also be in the Visitor Center demonstrating their skills and a Native food vendor will be on site. Storytelling and children's activities will take place throughout the afternoon as well.
The outdoor Mission will be open with costumed volunteers introducing visitors to life in 1657.

The trails will remain open until 9pm on these evenings as long as there is adequate snow cover. This is the opportunity for skiers and snowshoers to take advantage of the natural moonlight along Beaver Lake's ten miles of trails. At trail's end is the Visitor Center with comfortable seating. Hot chocolate and other refreshments will be available. For their safety, night visitors should remember to sign-in and sign-out at the Visitor Center, go with friend, and remember to bring a flashlight in case a section of the trail is especially dark.
